In March 2022, The Walking Dead wrapped filming for the final episode of the series. It was a bittersweet day for the cast, crew, and fans as reality set in that 2022 would close the book on the stories of the long-running series. Earlier in March, actor Norman Reedus who portrays Daryl Dixon suffered what was described by his publicity rep as a concussion on set,” but in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Reedus revealed it was much more severe.

Reedus shared in the interview that he thought he would die from the injury. This comes from a man who, in 2005, was driving a car in Berlin, hit by an 18-wheeler and thrown through the windshield. The car accident left him with four screws in his nose and a titanium eye socket.

Viewers have often seen Daryl with scrapes and black eyes, which are often real injuries Reedus has sustained on set. He has even fallen off his motorcycle and received other injuries during filming but stated, “It was very serious. It was scary. I’ve been hit in the face and the head a million times. I’ve gone through car windows, but that one rung my bell.”

The most recent injury occurred on March 11 and required Reddus to undergo several tests and implement several precautions to ensure a safe recovery. He had to sit in the dark, listening to New York City rain and other calming apps, in the dark, with the ringer on his phone turned off because medical personnel told him no phone calls or TV.

Add to all his physical struggles came the mental worrying about this injury setting back production for the final episode. The last season of the series is a mega 24 episodes which required the cast, crew, and the lot to film for an entire year. He worried his injury would cause problems by delaying things even longer.

Luckily he made a quick recovery and was able to get back to filming for the final episode, which will air on AMC on November 20.

Reedus, along with Melissa McBride, who portrays Carol Peletier, are the two remaining characters from season 1 still featured in the series. It has been a remarkable 12-year run, but fans are really going to miss these two and the rest of the characters in this series.
