AMC and AMC+ will premiere the first of the final eight episodes of The Walking Dead on Sunday, October 2. Fans are excited to see what is coming but are also full of sadness, knowing this is the beginning of the end. Luckily, several spinoff series will be coming to replace the void the main series will leave in many fans’ lives.

One of those spinoffs will see the return of TWD’s hero Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and his wife Michonne (Danai Gurira). The announcement that was made at the 2022 San Deigo Comic Con shocked the fandom. For quite some time, AMC promised a trilogy of Walking Dead movies to see Rick’s return. But, with some leadership changes at the network, it was thought best to keep this story in-house. This has evolved into a series featuring the power couple.

In season 9, Rick, who was thought to have died in an explosion, was taken to the Civic Republic, possibly in Pennsylvania, by Jadis (Pollyanna McIntosh). In season 10, Michonne, discovering that he didn’t die, took off in search of her love.

The Walking Dead -Rick and Michonne spinoff

Don’t expect the same Rick and Michonne to return to the universe. Both characters have been through significant events since we’ve last seen them. Scott Gimple has said we will see more of Red Machete Rick and Michonne, who fought the Governor, which is exciting news!

Another interesting comment Gimple made was that this series will take place somewhere The Walking Dead Universe has yet to see. This is quite intriguing because if you factor in all the locations seen in Fear TWD, World Beyond, and Tales of TWD, not to mention the main series, it makes one wonder where this series could possibly be set.

Both Rick and Michonne headed north upon leaving the communities, but it is hard to say where they would finally be reunited. We can rule out Georgia and Virginia from the flagship series as well as Nebraska, New York State and Pennsylvania from World Beyond. Fear TWD has been located in California, Mexico and Texas. Fear TWD began filming season 8 in Savannah, but there has been no word on what the story locations will be. The Walking Dead: Dead City is set in Manhattan, and Daryl will head off to France. Tales of the Walking Dead saw episodes in Ohio, Georgia, Maine, and others we are unsure about.

This leaves many places where Rick and Michonne’s story could take place. There has been no official word if filming for this series has commenced, but even when it does, just because it is filmed in one location doesn’t mean that is where it will be set. It is exciting to speculate on where this series will take place.
