This week’s episode of The Walking Dead marked the final midseason premiere the show will air. The episode, “Lockdown,” picked up where events of the final midseason finale left off. Lance Hornsby took over Alexandria, Hilltop, and Oceanside and was on the search for Maggie and the others. In the new episode, Hornsby continues his search while things are heating up at the Commonwealth, and they have a new guy in town.

This article contains spoilers for The Walking Dead season 11, episode 17, “Lockdown.”

This week viewers saw Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) head to the Commonwealth. As he had never been seen by anyone there, he was the perfect person to send inside. He met with Mercer (Michael James Shaw) and notified him that Daryl had sent him and what was happening with Lance Hornsby (Josh Hamilton) outside the Commonwealth Walls.

We got to witness his first reaction to the community.

The other purpose of his visit was to locate Carol (Melissa McBride). He encounters Jerry (Cooper Andrews), who promptly takes him to Carol’s house.

When he first sees her, he says, “I probably should’ve stayed in the cabin.” This references two things. Carol tried to politely banish him to Leah’s (Lynn Collins) cabin in the “Here’s Negan” episode. She felt it was only a matter of time before Maggie (Lauren Cohan) would kill him, and it would be best for him to exile himself.

The other reference is to Negan’s comic story. He did isolate himself from the group and never entered the gates of the Commonwealth. It was a fun nod to both stories.

Negan and Carol made quite the team in this week’s episode. They sought to find the Governor’s son, Sebastian (Teo Rapp-Olsson), who was hiding after his underhanded schemes had been revealed to the citizens of the Commonwealth. They now demand justice.
