The Walking Dead series is slowly working its way to the final episode of the series. Fans, cast, and creators of the series feel the end is near and are feeling nostalgic for this iconic series. If you browse social media, you see a massive number of posts looking back at previous seasons with fondness.

At the start of the season 11 part 3 premiere episode, “Lockdown,” Judith (Cailey Fleming) narrates about the beginning of the outbreak and people who chose to survive. In contrast, others decided to embrace the darkness. And her wondering about what’s to come. During this monologue, many flashback clips of the series feature our survivors, including many who have been lost along the way. (watch it here: Opening Minutes Season 11 Episode 17)

In the video below, Angela Kang, Scott M. Gimple and Denise Huth talk about these flashback pieces. Kang shared that Gimple pitched the idea of these memories and featuring them at the beginning of the episodes as a tribute to the journey.

Gimple added that these segments contrast the beginning and what is going on now. He said it is an emotional time for everyone, and these memories show who our characters were and who they are now.

Huth stated they wanted to find a way to honor previous episodes and prepare everyone for the end, as these are the final eight episodes. She also recognized the emotional journey fans have gone on while watching this series. She hopes fans can feel the comfort of the nostalgia these clips can bring.

For me, this is a beautiful, albeit emotional, way to remember everything that has gone on before and for viewers to remember all the characters we’ve lost.

The Walking Dead final season

The Walking Dead returns to AMC on Sunday, October 9, with episode 18, “A New Deal.” This episode is now available on AMC+.

This episode will pick up immediately following the previous one that left us with Daryl (Norman Reedus) holding a knife to Lance Hornsby’s (Josh Hamilton) neck.
