The Walking Dead missed a great story with this character death
By Renee Hansen
The Walking Dead’s recent episode “A New Deal” had its share of action but also some critical story development. Things are heating up at the Commonwealth, and just when our survivors think they are getting ahead, a new development might set back these plans. There was one semi-major death that is a wasted opportunity.
This article contains spoilers for The Walking Dead season 11, episode 18, “A New Deal.”
If you know the comic story, you know that Sebastian kills Rick Grimes. Carl sees through his fake remorse, knowing he only regrets being caught. Sebastian is imprisoned and spends the rest of his days in jail. In the 25-year time jump, he is still in prison, and his mother visits him often.
Fans of the series know that Sebastian’s (Teo Rapp-Olsson) story won’t involve the killing of Rick (Andrew Lincoln), as he is no longer in this storyline. Sebastian was killed in episode 18 after Max (Margot Bingham) released a recording of Sebastian bad-mouthing the community. But what was the point of introducing him only to kill him?
The storyline could have been so much better if the comic story was played out and Sebastian chose another victim.

Now, I don’t want to see any of my favorites die, and neither does the rest of the fandom. But this is the final run of episodes, and it seems pointless, in an apocalypse, not to lose some characters. If this was the beginning of the series, no one would be safe. But, as things have progressed, the series writers have been less likely to kill any significant characters, fearful of fan backlash.
Killing Sebastian in the second episode of part 3 of the final episodes seems a waste of a storyline and the skills of a talented actor. How much better would things have been with him killing someone else instead of Rick and using that to shock the fandom?
Sebastian’s death was pretty cool, but it seems entirely pointless. Perhaps this will make more sense as the remaining six episodes air.
