The Walking Dead universe has a full year of content prepared for 2023. Fear the Walking Dead will premiere its eighth and final season in May, and The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon is expected sometime in the second half of the year. The first new spinoff that will release this year is The Walking Dead: Dead City.

Dead City (formerly titled Isle of the Dead) will feature two of the flagship series characters on a mission to Manhattan. This series will feature the unlikely pairing of Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and Maggie (Lauren Cohan). These two characters have never been friends due to Negan’s killing of Maggie’s husband, Glenn. In The Walking Dead series finale, Maggie tells Negan that she is appreciative of what he did for her son Hershel, but when she thinks of Glenn, all she can remember is his horrific final moments that were inflicted by Negan.

The new series will take place on the island of Manhattan that, early after the outbreak, was cut off from the mainland as the US Government blew up all of the bridges and tunnels. The location has been overrun by a horde of walkers one million strong.

This will be the first direct sequel spinoff, with principal filming taking place in New Jersey.

The Walking Dead: Dead City release date

During NYCC 2022, it was announced that Dead City will see a release in April 2023. In January 2023, AMC announced this release has been changed to June 2023.

The Walking Dead: Dead City synopsis

"The Walking Dead: Dead City envisions the popular Maggie and Negan characters traveling into a post-apocalyptic Manhattan long ago cut off from the mainland.  The crumbling city is filled with the dead and denizens who have made New York City their own world full of anarchy, danger, beauty, and terror."
