Entertainment Weekly sat down with several of our favorite Walking Dead cast members during NYCC 2022. It was a great meld of new and old characters, including Lauren Ridloff, who plays Connie, and Eleanor Matsuura, who plays Yumiko. The interviewer asked the cast to share the first scene they filmed for the series.
Ridloff and Matsuura were introduced to the series during season 9, episode five, “What Comes After.” The episode was written by Matt Negrete & Scott Gimple and directed by Greg Nicotero. This would be the same episode that saw Rick Grimes’ (Andrew Lincoln) whisked away in a CRM helicopter.
In the first scene in which we saw Connie, Yumiko, Kelly (Angel Theory), Magna (Nadia Hilker), and Luke (Dan Fogler), they were struggling to fight off a group of walkers.
The Walking Dead season 9 What Comes After?
This scene took place six years after Rick was thought to have died in the bridge explosion, and Connie and her group were saved by a much older Judith Grimes, who Cailey Fleming then played.
Ridloff remembers filming in the field and bumping into Judith for the first time, sharing that it was a fantastic moment.
Matsuura remembers being exhausted after filming the fight scene. They watched as Judith introduced herself, placing the iconic hat on her head, and realized this was an epic moment in Walking Dead history.
In the current timeline, Connie and her group have outed the recently late Sebastian Milton (Teo-Rapp Olsson) for his crimes. His mother, Governor Milton (Laila Robins), will undoubtedly continue to seek out those responsible for the leaked information.
This could put Yumiko, the Governor’s legal counsel, in a sticky spot as she may have to prosecute her friends.
The Walking Dead returns to AMC Sundays with new episodes until the series finale on November 20.
