AMC is currently airing the last episodes of The Walking Dead series. The final season has been broken into three parts, the first of which began in August 2021, the second in February 2022, and the final started on October 2. With a fantastic 12-year run, this is a series that will be sorely missed by its viewers.

The final episode, “Rest in Peace,” will air on AMC and AMC+ simultaneously on November 20, with no early release for AMC+ subscribers. This will prevent spoilers from ruining the epic finale episode directed by Greg Nicotero and written by showrunner Angela Kang.

The Walking Dead series airs at the 9 p.m. ET timeslot on AMC. Traditionally the episode is immediately followed by Talking Dead, a talk show which breaks down the new episode and hosts special guests, including cast, crew and super fans. With the release of Anne Rice’s Interview with a Vampire series, Talking Dead has been pushed back to approx. 11:10 p.m. ET.

The Walking Dead – what’s next

The airing of the final episode of The Walking Dead will leave a gaping void in viewers of the series’ lives. So, what’s a fan to do? Hold on for a bit, and new Walking Dead universe content will be coming in the form of spinoff series.

Fear the Walking Dead is the first spinoff of the series that is currently filming its eighth season. The seventh season was met with tepid reviews, and fans are hoping for a drastic change for the upcoming season. Showrunners have used the word “reinventing” regarding the new season and a change of filming locations to Savannah, Georgia, gives them a prime opportunity to do so. New episodes for season 8 could release early in 2023, but no official announcement has been made public.

The Walking Dead: Dead City is the first direct spinoff of the flagship series. Viewers will see the pairing of former enemies, Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), travel to the island of Manhattan. There has been no news on what takes them to his location. We do know that Manhattan had been cut off from the mainland early after the outbreak and given up to the walkers, which now consists of a horde of 1 million strong. This series is scheduled for release in April 2023.

Daryl Dixon’s (Norman Reedus) series will be filmed and set in France. He will go to France against his will and encounter the variant walkers seen in The Walking Dead: World Beyond coda scene. Reedus has teased that fans will never know who Daryl runs into, eluding to the fact that other characters in TWDU could be featured in this series.

The Rick and Michonne spinoff will see the return of Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira in their respective roles. This has excited the fandom, as many want to see more of their story. Scott M. Gimple has stated theirs is an epic love story.

So, as sad as the end of The Walking Dead is, there is much more story to be told in the form of spinoffs.
