Cooper Andrews has been portraying Jerry on The Walking Dead since season 7, episode 2, “The Well.” And since his introduction has been a positive light in the apocalypse. It seems that no matter what Jerry comes up against, he can find the positive in any situation. During season 11’s episode “Variant,” we finally get to see much more of Jerry. He was traveling with Aaron (Ross Marquand),  Lydia (Cassady McClincy), and Elijah (Okea Eme-Akwari) on their way to Alexandria with a pit stop at Oceanside. Jerry gets injured, requiring them to stop for the night. They found an abandoned Renaissance Festival grounds and end up meeting a variant walker and his horde.

Cooper shared that he was glad to get back into the action in this episode. Did you see his sweet sword-fighting skills? That’s new!

In the interview with AMC.com, Andrews was asked about Jerry’s sense of joy. He stated that part of it is how Jerry is, but a lot of it comes from himself as it is him having his best day. He feels that someone like Jerry would be in the apocalypse, infecting joy in the people he meets, and he is happy to portray that guy.

Andrews also talked about Jerry trusting Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). He believes that Jerry trusts Carol (Melissa McBride), and if Carol can trust him, so can Jerry. People tend to forget that Carol was married to Jerry’s best friend, Ezekiel (Khary Payton). During this time, Jerry and Carol formed a special bond that didn’t end when the romantic relationship between Carol and Ezekiel was over. He went on to remind us that Jerry knows what Negan did, but he wasn’t there, so that memory isn’t etched into his brain.

Another interesting comment that Andrews made was about the scene when he first sees Negan in the Commonwealth, and he is eating an apple. Greg Nicotero said to him, “You’re eating an apple during this protest?” Andrews response? “It’s not my protest.” Morgan then commented that he loved that.

Many fans are worried for Jerry as he was heavily focused in this episode and hasn’t been for a time. A lot of times, that signals a character is about to die. Hopefully not, as Jerry has Nabila (Nadine Marissa) and their children who need him. Let’s hope Jerry and his family get their kingdom and live happily ever after.

Be sure to read the entire interview at AMC.com as it is full of great Jerry knowledge and a heartfelt ending about Andrews’ time on the series.
