In 2020 The Walking Dead series announced that season 11 would be the final.  Now, two years later, we are quickly approaching the last episode of the series. To soothe the blow of this announcement, the network extended the final season episode count to 24, released in three parts. When does the last episode of The Walking Dead air?

In August 2021, the first episode of The Walking Dead’s eleventh and final season aired. This would be followed with part 2 beginning in February 2022. The last segment of episodes premiered on October 2, 2022, with the last eight episodes the series would ever air.

On November 20, 2022, AMC will air The Walking Dead, season 11, episode 24, “Rest in Peace,” which will conclude the story that began on Halloween night in October 2010.

The Walking Dead series finale

The final episode was written by showrunner Angela Kang and directed by Greg Nicotero. This marks the 30th episode Kang has written or co-written and Nicotero’s 37th directed episode of the series.

Much is expected of this episode, but will any ending truly please fans, most of whom wish the series wasn’t ending?

Part 3 of the season has brought our survivors back together, as they have been scattered throughout season 11, to join as one and fight the Commonwealth and their evil leader Governor Pamela Milton (Laila Robins). So far, the death toll has been high this year, but none of the main characters have perished. Could this change with the finale episode? Viewers will know soon enough.

The official synopsis for this episode reads:

"Daryl and Carol rush Judith to the hospital; Rosita, Eugene and Gabriel search for Coco; Maggie and Negan take arms against Pamela; the heros assemble for one last stand."

The title of the last episode, “Rest in Peace,” is also the title of the last volume in the comic series. Five other episodes used the comic volume titles and were adaptations of those stories, “Days Gone Bye,” “No Way Out,” “A New Beginning,” “A Certain Doom,” and “Here’s Negan.”

Another piece of trivia, this episode marks the second series finale in The Walking Dead universe following The Walking Dead: World Beyond series finale, “The Last Light.”

Don’t miss The Walking Dead series finale on November 20, when it airs simultaneously on AMC and AMC+.
