On November 20, 2022, The Walking Dead aired the series finale episode titled “Rest in Peace.” It was a roller coaster of a ride of emotions, but it can be confidently stated that TWD creators did fans justice with its last episode. One HUGE question on people’s minds is, did Rick appear in the finale episode?

This article contains spoilers for The Walking Dead’s series finale episode, “Rest in Peace.”

I’ll include a BTS photo as a buffer.

The answer is yes. Andrew Lincoln, who portrays Rick Grimes, does appear at the end of the episode, as does Danai Gurira, who plays his wife, Michonne. It was an amazing surprise, and fans were ecstatic to see these two once again.

Lincoln made his departure in season 9 with the promise of a trilogy of movies that would feature Rick. The pandemic and restructuring at AMC Networks delayed the movies, but the result was a spinoff series featuring Rick and Mochonne, which chief content officer for AMC, Scott M. Gimple, calls “an epic love story.”

The Walking Dead Rick and Michonne spinoff

The series finale scene featuring Rick and Michonne shows that she is still searching for him, and he is on the run from the CRM (Civic Republic Military).

The scene is beautifully filmed, showing Rick and Michoone in their respective locations going about the same tasks. They narrate letters/journal entries they are writing as clips of characters who have died along the way pan across the screen. Their narrations intertwine as they share similar thoughts.

Michonne is featured in what appears to be present day with a new kick-a$$ outfit, still carrying her katana. She is keeping a journal for Judith (Cailey Fleming) and RJ (Antony Azor), chronicling her journey to find their father. She is in possession of Rick’s boots and the etching of her and Judith, both of which she found on a boat at Bloodworth Island, which leads her to go in search of him at the end of season 10.

Rick’s timeline is set in the past, he is wearing a CRM jacket, indicated by the three rings, and is writing a letter to Michonne. But, in his scenes, he still carries his boots and the etching, which he throws onboard a boat as a CRM helicopter locates him, and the pilot addresses him as Consignee Grimes, telling him, “Come on Rick, it’s like he told you, there’s no escape for the living.” But we don’t know who “he” is.

Another interesting item Rick has in his possession is a coat and weapon like Silas (Hal Cumpston) used in The Walking Dead: World Beyond in his job at the culling facility where the CRM rids themselves of hordes of walkers. It appears when Jadis (Pollyanna McIntosh) traded Rick, he was assigned to work at a culling facility and somehow manage to escape, drop the items in the boat, throw out the message in a bottle, and be captured again. I have gone back to double-check in season 10, episode 13, “What We Become,” and it is the same boat that ends up at Bloodworth Island.

The Rick and Michonne spinoff will be an exciting new chapter for two beloved characters.
