The Walking Dead universe saw the conclusion of the flagship series in November 2022. But the stories are far from over, with several new spinoffs in production. TWDU isn’t unique to spinoffs, as there have been three released previously, Fear the Walking Dead, The Walking Dead: World Beyond, and Tales of the Walking Dead. There are at least three currently in production, with The Walking Dead: Dead City being the first of the new series to release in 2023.
Dead City will focus on Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and Maggie (Lauren Cohan) as they travel to the island of Manhattan. The island was cut off early in the outbreak when the US Government bombed the bridges and tunnels connecting it to the mainland. Since then, it has been left to its own devices, and a horde of over 1 million has been amassed there.
Cohan has shared with Entertainment Weekly that this series will pick up “a few years” after The Walking Dead series finale episode.
The final episode of The Walking Dead didn’t indicate why they would be headed off to this location. Viewers did finally hear Negan utter, “I’m sorry,” the words Maggie has longed to hear, for his brutal killing of her husband, Glenn (Steven Yeun). She told him while she appreciates what he did to save her son, she will never be able to forgive him for Glenn.
The Walking Dead: Dead City release date
AMC has announced that Dead City will see a release in April 2023. This gives fans a few month breaks before new TWDU content is released.
UPDATE: 01/10/2023 AMC has announced Dead City will release in June 2023.
In the meantime, fans can watch the entire series of The Walking Dead on Netflix as season 11 releases on the streamer on January 6, 2023.
The Walking Dead: Dead City synopsis
This series will begin years after the season 11 one-year time jump seen in The Walking Dead finale. Maggie and Negan will form an alliance that takes them on a dangerous mission to Manhattan. As the island had been cut off from the mainland since early after the outbreak, this location has seen its own threats develop.
Dead City synopsis:
"Years have passed since we last saw Maggie and Negan and they must now form a tenuous alliance in order to accomplish a dangerous mission. Maggie and Negan journey to the island of Manhattan, which, having been isolated since the beginning of the walker apocalypse, has developed its own unique threats. While in the city, Maggie and Negan encounter native New Yorkers, evade a marshal with a troubled past, and hunt down a notorious killer. But as the pair moves deeper into the gritty depths of the walker-infested city, it becomes apparent that the traumas of their tumultuous past may prove just as great a threat as the dangers of the present."
