Chandler Riggs – Walking Dead finale
Riggs made headlines with his Walking Dead series finale cameo in November 2022. Fans of the series may not have seen him on the first watch, but they were defiantly on the lookout during the rewatch.
His appearance came during the one-year time jump scene at Hilltop. Riggs portrayed Carl Grimes from season 1 until his death in season 8. And his death was a significant disappointment for comic and series fans alike.
Carl survives until the end of the comic and carries on the Grimes legacy. His early departure from the series dashed fans’ hopes of seeing his end mimic the comic story, which sees a 20+ year time jump.
He texted executive producer Denise Huth to find out the date of the final day of filming so he could be there for the historic event. It was an exciting day on set as Huth only told the cast and crew she had a surprise. The idea to place him in the scene wasn’t planned it just happened. Riggs told Entertainment Weekly:
"I was just in this shirt and jeans that I came down there in. They grabbed a hat from wardrobe. It was like Father Gabriel’s hat! And they gave me a hoe and said, “Be a part of the background for one of the last shots.”"
It was an iconic moment for Riggs to share the screen with Lauren Cohan, Melissa McBride, and Norman Reedus as he had filmed alongside them throughout his time on the series. Riggs stated that this was the first time on a Walking Dead set since his final filming in August 2017.
Riggs also attended the finale event held in Los Angeles on November 20, 2022. This was a star-studded event celebrating 12 years of these series and a viewing of the finale episode of The Walking Dead.
