The next spinoff scheduled to release in The Walking Dead universe will see the reappearance of two familiar faces. Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) will team up in this new story that takes them to New York. What happens that will require them to go to this location? Nothing has been revealed yet, but it is exciting to speculate what’s to come.

Little is known about Dead City; the series formerly titled Isle of the Dead.  What has been announced does sound like it will be an exciting story. The island of Manhattan had been cut off by the US government early in the outbreak as all of the bridges and tunnels were destroyed.

The population of Manhattan in 2010 was approximately 1.5 million people. Sure some would have removed themselves from the area, but the majority were left stranded with no escape. During that time, the area was overrun by a horde of walkers 1 million strong. The citizens who remain there live above the tenth floor and travel between buildings via ziplines.

Cohan has stated that this series will begin a few years after the one-year time jump of The Walking Dead’s finale, “Rest in Peace.” In this episode, Maggie talks to Carol (Melissa McBride) and Daryl (Norman Reedus) about the future and that there is more to be discovered.

In the finale, Negan went off, presumably with Annie (Medina Senghore), and in the one-year time jump, would have had their child. This is considered a nod to Negan’s comic character and his choice to live away from the other survivors.

Maggie & Negan go to Manhattan to save a loved one or loved ones. Nothing short of harm to Hershel would take Maggie away from Hilltop, where she was last seen in TWD finale. The same goes for Negan, who, for all viewers know, is now a father.

This isn’t a buddy comedy, but two people put together purely out of necessity. One of the promo shots for this series shows Maggie with a knife to Negan’s throat. It has also been revealed, by Morgan, that Negan could revert to his old ways. This would cause friction between these two characters.

Annie will die. This one is harsh, but it will be one extreme or the other; she will die or be dead when the series begins or have a significant role in this series.

Other familiar faces will show up. It won’t be Rick, Daryl, or Michonne, but it is highly possible some others may make the journey with Maggie and Negan.

New walker variants. The walkers in Manhattan have been isolated to this location and could be some of the smarter variants that haven’t been able to make it off the island to the mainland.

The Walking Dead: Dead City is slated for an April 2023 release date.

UPDATE: 01/10/2023 AMC has announced Dead City will release in June 2023.
