The Walking Dead: Dead City will be the next spinoff of The Walking Dead. This series is scheduled for release in April 2023 and will be the first direct spinoff of the flagship series. Two familiar faces, Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), will head on a mission that takes them to the island of Manhattan.

Dead City, formerly titled Isle of the Dead, will begin years after events of the main series that saw a one-year time jump at its conclusion. An unknown event will require Maggie and Negan to form an alliance to take on a dangerous mission to Manhattan.

While there, they will encounter native New Yorkers, who have been isolated on the island since the US Government blew up the bridges and tunnels to the city early after the outbreak. The synopsis also tells of the unique threats the citizens have endured since the apocalypse’s beginning.

The duo will also encounter a marshal with a troubled past and hunt down a notorious killer. If they are hunting down someone, perhaps this person has killed someone close to them, which makes them form an alliance in the act of revenge.

In the series finale of The Walking Dead, it appeared that things might be smoothing over between the pair, especially when Negan finally uttered the words “I’m sorry,” words Maggie needed to hear. But another conversation would reveal that although Maggie is grateful to Negan for saving her son Hershel (Kien Michael Spiller), she will never be able to forgive him for Glenn’s (Steven Yeun) death. She tells him that when she remembers Glenn, she sees him after Negan bashes his head and looks on with a smile.

The synopsis also states that the past will creep into their alliance and could become just as significant a threat as what else they encounter in Manhattan. That could explain this promo photo where Maggie is holding a knife to Negan’s throat.

The first season of The Walking Dead: Dead City will have six episodes and premiere on AMC and AMC+ in April 2023.
