Will there be a Walking Dead movie?
By Renee Hansen
Fans of the long-running zombie drama, The Walking Dead experienced heavy emotions in 2022 when the main series completed its 12-year run. After the departure of Andrew Lincoln (Rick Grimes) in season 9, fans have been patiently waiting for any news regarding the trilogy of movies that would see Lincoln reprise his role. Since the original announcement of the films, things have significantly altered, and those movies have been scraped to make way for a Rick and Michonne (Danai Gurira) spinoff series whose title appears to be The Walking Dead: Summit.
Although many fans were excited to see Rick on the big screen, the creation of the series allows AMC Networks to maintain control of the story. COO Scott M. Gimple will serve as the showrunner for the series, with Lincoln and Gurira as executive producers. Filming for this series will begin in February 2023 in Atlanta, Georgia, and then move to Carlstadt, New Jersey.
The original press release stated that this series “will begin with six episodes in 2023,” making it sound like it would last more than one season, but other reports claim that this spinoff will only run for one season.
The Walking Dead: Summit
A coda scene in the series finale episode of The Walking Dead featured Rick and Michonne, to the delight of fans. These scenes revealed what has transpired with each character since they were last seen.
Rick’s scenes took place sometime after being traded to the CRM (Civic Republic Military), but before Michonne knew he survived the bridge explosion. He was wearing a CRM jacket, and a helicopter had relocated him after what appeared to be his escape from the organization.
Michonne’s timeline is closer to the present as she is still searching for Rick and writes letters to her children, Judith and RJ.
The coda scene focused on the “we’re the ones who live” quote used several times in the series.
An official synopsis for the Rick and Michonne series has yet to be released, but Gimple has stated, “It’s an epic love story, but it’s an epic and insane love story.”
