When do The Walking Dead spinoffs start?
By Renee Hansen
The Walking Dead universe is set to see a significant expansion after the flagship series story has closed. The main story has concluded for the majority of the characters, but for some, the story will continue in the form of Walking Dead spinoffs. When will the spinoffs begin to air on AMC and AMC+?
Fear the Walking Dead is the first spinoff in TWDU. Although it is set in the same universes, this series is set in different areas of the US with a different cast. There have been three cross-over characters tying the stories together. Morgan Jones (Lennie James) and the husband and wife duo of Dwight (Austin Amelio) and Sherry (Christina Evangelista) have all starred in TWD and made a move to Fear TWD. The eighth and final season of Fear TWD will premiere on AMC on May 14, 2023. This will be part one of two for the final season, with part 2 coming later, and this segment will experience a seven-year time jump.
The first new spinoff that will release in 2023 is The Walking Dead: Dead City. This series will focus on Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) as they travel to Manhattan for an unknown purpose. Dead City also marks the first direct spinoff of the main series. The US government cut off the island from the mainland early after the outbreak, and since then, a horde of walkers over 1 million strong has been created. The teaser trailer shows that they will meet new friends, foes, and some pretty creepy walkers. This series will release in June 2023, following part 1 of season eight of Fear the Walking Dead.
The Walking Dead spinoffs
The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon is the next series expected to release. Currently filming in France, this series will see Daryl (Norman Reedus) arrive at the overseas location with no recollection of how or why he is in this location. Reedus has teased fans stating that some familiar faces may also appear in the series. He will encounter a religious group run by Isabelle (Clémence Poésy’) and a black marketeer Quinn (Adam Nagaitis). Daryl’s goal is to return home, but the connections he makes during this quest make things difficult. Daryl Dixon is expected to release in the second part of 2023. Update: new casting announcements.
The Walking Dead: Rick and Michonne series will see the titular characters back in what has been described as an “epic love story.” Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurria recently returned for a coda scene in The Walking Dead finale episode. Filming for Summit began Feb. 2023 in New Jersey, and the series is expected to release in 2024.
