On the seventh anniversary of Richonne, the ship name used for The Walking Dead’s powerhouse couple Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira), fans were treated to updates on the spinoff series. Fans of TWDU are excited about the Rick and Michonne spinoff, and AMC shared the new images with the announcement that filming for the series has begun.
Rick and Michonne became official on Feb. 21, 2016, in the episode “The Next World.” This was a moment many viewers longed for, as the pair had such chemistry. The fandom celebrated Richonne.
Their relationship takes a turn during season 9 when Rick, in a heroic move to save his family and friends, blows up a bridge. Onlookers, including Michonne, believed he was killed in the blast. Viewers were privy to the fact that he was blown clear and rescued by Jadis (Pollyanna McIntosh) and the CRM (Civic Republic Military). In season 10, Michonne discovers that Rick survived and sets out to search for her true love.
The Walking Dead series concluded its story on Nov. 20, 2022, and surprised fans with a coda scene featuring Rick and Michonne. It was the perfect way to wrap up the season and prepare fans for the upcoming spinoff featuring more stories in the lives of these two characters.
The Rick and Michonne series, Summit, is described as an epic love story with six episodes that will premiere in 2024. Filming for the series began in February 2023 in New Jersey, and there have been reports that some of the filming will also occur in Georgia.
TWD Chief Content Officer Scott M. Gimple will serve as showrunner and executive producer with Lincoln, Gurira, Brian Bockrath, and TWD veteran Denise Huth.
