Fans of The Walking Dead remember actress Samantha Morton for her outstanding portrayal of Alpha, the leader of the Whisperers. Morton also stars in the highly acclaimed A24 movie The Whale, which has made headlines for Brendan Fraser’s performance. The film, which saw a limited release in theaters, is now available on video on demand.

The Wrestler and Black Swan director Darren Aronofsky also directed The Whale, based on a play by Samuel D. Hunter. The story follows Fraser’s Charlie, a reclusive online English teacher who is severely obese who tries to mend things with his estranged teenage daughter while seeking redemption.

Fraser, known for his roles in Encino Man and School Ties, plays Charlie with Sadie Sink, of Stranger Things fame, as his daughter Ellie. Morton portrays Charlie’s ex-wife, Mary, with Hong Chau, Ty Simpkins, and Sathya Sridharan also starring.

The Whale premiered at the 79th Venice Film Festival, where it received a six-minute standing ovation in September 2022.The film is now available to watch on Amazon Prime VOD for $19.99

Samantha Morton – other roles

Morton will reprise her role as Catherine De Medici in season 2 of The Serpent Queen, which airs on Starz. The series is a darkly comedic look at the life and times of Catherine, brilliantly portrayed by Morton. This series is based on the book by Leonie Frieda, Catherine de Medici: Renaissance Queen of France.

Next, she will star as Reverand Jack Brooks in the Paramount+ series Buring Girls. After the death of her husband, Reverand Brooks, and her daughter Flo, played by Bridgerton actress Ruby Stokes, move to Chapel Croft to begin a new life. They discover their new town has conspiracies and secrets to contend with as they live in the shadow of the tragedy of their previous church.
