Željko Ivanek portrays a villain in Walking Dead: Dead City teaser
By Renee Hansen
Fans of The Walking Dead: Dead City were treated to a quick new teaser for the series. The clip shows that Maggie (Lauren Cohan) is again facing tragedy, but this time, she will partner with Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), a man responsible for one of her most significant losses. The teaser also reveals that newcomer to The Walking Dead universe, Željko Ivanek, will portray a villain in the new series.
Dead City is a spinoff of The Walking Dead featuring two of that series’ main characters, Maggie and Negan. The pair will travel to Manhattan to rescue Maggie’s son Hershel, the only other announced character from TWD to also appear in this series.
Showrunner Eli Jorné has compared Dead City’s Manhattan to movies like Escape from New York and The Warriors, a wasteland full of criminals. The teaser shows Ivanek’s character, The Croat, to be one of these criminals in what appears to be Herhsel’s kidnapper.

It has long been speculated that something traumatic would cause Maggie to partner with Negan. And what is more traumatic for a mother than something to do with her children? Poor Maggie has suffered more than most, and this time she will be fighting for her life and that of Hershel.
With so much tragedy, could this send Maggie down a path she may never return from? Especially if she is partnered with someone like Negan, who has a villainous past and has pointed out how much alike they actually are.
In the teaser, Ivanek’s character appears to have many associates to back him up, whereas Maggie and Negan appear to only have one ally in Jano (Trey Santiago-Hudson).
Dead City is shaping up to be an action-packed series very different from what viewers are used to in TWDU, as it is set in the concrete jungle of NYC.
Ivanek is well known for his roles in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Seven Psychopaths, Hannibal, Now and Then, Madam Secretary, and many more.
AMC will debut The Walking Dead: Dead City in June 2023.
