Who is getting a spinoff from The Walking Dead?
By Renee Hansen
The Walking Dead series aired on AMC for 12 years ending with 177 episodes. During that time, many characters were introduced to the storyline, and along the way, many were lost. By the final season, many favorites were still standing, and several of these characters’ stories will continue in the form of spinoff series. Which characters can fans expect to see in the new series?
Maggie Rhee (née Greene) – portrayed by Lauren Cohan, Maggie will see her story carry on in The Walking Dead: Dead City, which will be the first direct spinoff of the main series. This series will see her son Hershel abducted and taken to the island of Manhattan, which is overrun by millions of walkers and a new group of enemies and hopefully some allies.
Negan Smith – portrayed by Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Negan will join Maggie in Dead City, and the pair will join forces to rescue Hershel. The teaser shows that not only is Negan a wanted man, but he is also, according to Maggie, the key to recovering her son. Dead City will premiere in June 2023.
The actors of Dead City have teased that other familiar faces could appear, but no announcements to this effect have occurred.
The Walking Dead spinoffs
Daryl Dixon – portrayed by Norman Reedus, will get his own story in The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon. This series is set and filmed in France, and Daryl arrives without knowing how or why he is there. He will meet members of a religious group as he tries to return home.
Rick Grimes – a fan-favorite played by Andrew Lincoln, will return to The Walking Dead universe in Summit, a series that will give viewers information about where Rick has been and what’s next in his story. Daryl Dixon is scheduled for release in the second half of 2023.
Michonne – played by Danai Guiria, she will join Rick and finally be reunited with her true love. This series is described as an epic love story. Filming recently began for the series, which is expected to release in 2024.
