Even though The Walking Dead is set in an apocalypse, some characters formed romantic relationships as part of their survival. Regardless of circumstances, love seems to sneak in. One of the power couples of The Walking Dead series is Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira). Their story was an apocalyptic fairy tale beginning with what she thought was a tragic end. Will this couple return to The Walking Dead? I have good news and bad.

In season 9, Rick, hero that he is, performs an act of bravery to ensure the safety of his family and friends. Michonne and the others watched in horror as he blew up the bridge so the oncoming horde couldn’t reach Alexandria. What they didn’t see is that Rick was blown clear and, although severely injured, still very much alive. He was rescued by Jadis/Anne (Pollyanna McIntosh) and taken to the CRM (Civic Republic Military).

Later, in season 10, Michonne discovers he survived and heads off on a mission to find her true love.

Will they ever return to The Walking Dead story? That’s the bad news. The Walking Dead ended its story with season 11. The final episode aired on AMC in November 2022. The couple did appear in a coda scene for the last episode of the series.

There is good news concerning Rick and Michonne. In February 2023, filming began in New Jersey for a spinoff series, Summit, that will continue the story of these two characters. Described as an epic love story, Summit will see the highly anticipated reunion between Rick and Michonne. This is fantastic news for fans of TWDU and these two characters.

Details have been kept under wraps with Scott M. Gimple as showrunner and executive producer with Lincoln, Gurira, Denise Huth, and Brian Bockrath. The series will be six episodes and will be released in 2024.

Summit synopsis:

"The series presents an epic love story of two characters changed by a changed world. Kept apart by distance. By an unstoppable power. By the ghosts of who they were. Rick and Michonne are thrown into another world, built on a war against the dead… And ultimately, a war against the living. Can they find each other and who they were in a place and situation unlike any they’ve ever known before? Are they enemies? Lovers? Victims? Victors? Without each other, are they even alive — or will they find that they, too, are the Walking Dead?"
