Actor Ryan Hurst, best known for his role as Opie on Sons of Anarchy, portrayed Beta in The Walking Dead series. This character was very familiar to readers of the comic book created by Robert Kirkman, on which the show was based. Beta was a massive beast of a man, so it took someone of Hurst’s stature to pull off this character, and he did an outstanding job.
Introduced in season 9, Beta would stand as second in command next to Samantha Morton’s Alpha, who was the leader of skin mask-wearing leader of the Whisperers. Both actors did these characters justice and appeared to walk off the comic page. The Whisperers were a ruthless group who reigned terror over our survivors during seasons 9 and 10.
Beta was ruthless and brutal and was never seen without his partial mask, which viewers would discover was skin from his best friend’s face. The reason he hid his face was before the outbreak; he was well-known as Country musician Half Moon.
When Alpha is killed, and her head is put on one of her pikes, Beta begins a downward spiral. He believes her reanimated head can talk to him and will eventually add part of her face to his mask that had been damaged.
Did Beta die in The Walking Dead?
Beta meets his maker during the season 10 episode “A Certain Doom.” During the horde at the hospital, Beta hears Whisperers being killed by our survivors, who are covered in walker’s guts to blend in with the horde. He gets ready to head after Lydia (Cassady McClincy), but Negan, wearing his own Whisperer mask, calls out to him. Beta lunges toward him and throws a walker toward him, knocking him down. Beta gets on top of him, and they struggle; Beta raises his knife and says, “For Alpha,” as Daryl (Norman Reedus) slashes his side. On his knees, Beta turns toward Daryl, who proceeds to stab knives into both of his eyes.
Beta hallucinates, pulling the knives out of his eyes as the walkers embrace him, and he has flashbacks of Alpha. But in reality, Daryl pulls out the knives as the walkers descend upon Beta, eat him alive, and he smiles.
