What is The Walking Dead Summit?
By Renee Hansen
The Walking Dead franchise is quickly expanding with the addition of several spinoff series. The first spinoff of the main series, Fear the Walking Dead, will release its eighth and final season in May 2023, and the first direct spinoff, The Walking Dead: Dead City, will release in June. With so many additional series in production, it can be pretty confusing. What is the series being referred to as Summit?
One title thrown around is Summit, which is likely only the working title, this series will see the return of fan favorites Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Dania Gurira). It has been assumed that this is the working title, and the series could receive a different title once filming is complete. This was seen with Dead City, which initially went by the title Isle of the Dead.
Summit will continue the stories of Rick and Michonne and hopefully fill in the gaps since their departure from the main series. Rick left the series in season 9 when he made the heroic move to blow up a bridge to protect his family and friends. It was thought that he perished in the blast, but viewers were privy to the fact that he survived and was saved by Jadis (Pollyanna McIntosh). Both Rick and Jadis were carried away in a CRM (Civic Republic Military) helicopter.
In season 10, Michonne discovers that Rick survived and set out to find him. She discovered some clues to his whereabouts and sought to find her true love.
The Walking Dead series finale coda scene
Fans were surprised during a bonus scene of The Walking Dead’s last episode featuring Rick and Michonne. This scene saw Rick before Michonne discovered he survived and explained how he found the clues indicating he survived. Michonne’s timeline was closer to the present, and she was still looking for Rick.
The hope for Summit is that this storyline will explain how they reunite and what comes next. The CRM will play a vital role as it was revealed in the coda scene that Rick did escape from this organization but was located and likely recaptured. The timeline for this series hasn’t been announced, but it is possible viewers could see several time periods to tell the story of these characters leading up to their reunion.
Several familiar faces would fit nicely into Summit’s story. It will be exciting to see if any are included in this series. It has been heavily rumored that Pollyanna McIntosh is tied to this series. The only additional cast member announced is Lucifer actress Lesley-Ann Brandt who will play a character named Pearl Thorne.
Summit will be a limited six-episode series that will premiere in 2024.
