Walking Dead’s Andrew Lincoln ranked as one of TV’s Best Criers

Actor Andrew Lincoln is best known for portraying Walking Dead hero Rick Grimes. Robert Kirkman originally created his character for the comic series, and Lincoln would then bring Rick to life in the series. TVLive recently created a list of TV’s Best Criers, and it will come as no surprise to fans of The Walking Dead that Lincoln is included.

TVLine compiled the list of TV’s Best Criers and features an impressive list of 26 actors who can turn on the waterworks making viewers feel their pain right along with them. Some of the names included alongside Lincoln are Jensen Ackles (Supernatural), Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad), Alyson Hannigan (Buffy and How I Met Your Mother), Mae Witman (Parenthood), and Sophia Bush (One Tree Hill). 

The scene mentioned in the TVLive article for which Lincoln made the list is one fans of The Walking Dead can never forget. It happened in season 3, “Killer Within,” when Rick’s wife Lori (Sarah Wayne Callies) died while giving birth to their daughter Judith.

“Killer Within” was an action-packed episode that also saw Lori go into labor. Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Carl (Chandler Riggs) were with her during the birth, requiring Maggie to cut the child from her mother’s womb. It was gut-wrenching to watch Lori tell her son goodbye and then watch Carl put the bullet in her head, ensuring she wouldn’t reanimate. Then viewers had to watch Rick hear the newborn baby cry, and before he can rejoice in the birth of his daughter, he realizes something is wrong.

Rick, realizing Lori died, goes into an uncontrolled emotional outburst that would bring tears to the eyes of the most hardened viewer. Although they had their issues, Rick loved her and didn’t want her to die. He fought hard to find his way back to Lori and Carl, and this loss took a significant toll on him in the upcoming episodes.

While it was quite an emotional scene, it also became a widespread meme-making opportunity for the fandom. If you Google “Rick and Carl meme,” you will find what seems to be an unending thread of memes using shots of this scene.  Some of them are very fun, others not so much.

Andrew Lincoln most certainly deserved to be recognized as one of TV’s Best Criers.

Lincoln will return as Rick Grimes in the upcoming spinoff series Summit (working title). He will star with Danai Gurira, who will reprise her role as Michonne. The series has been filming in New Jersey and is scheduled to release in 2024.
