Fans of The Walking Dead, or any series, for that matter, always have many “ships” which fans will stand by. The Walking Dead is no exception to this! Everyone has a favorite ship or couple, whether they want to admit it or not. One of the greatest ships in The Walking Dead universe is Rick Grimes and Michonne Hawthorne or Richonne.

Throughout his time on the series, Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) was a force to be reckoned with. He was a leader, a fighter, and could also be compassionate when needed.  He started the series married to Lori (Sarah Wayne Callies), a character many viewers weren’t fond of. She was whiny and manipulative and got under people’s skin with the way she treated people.

Michonne (Danai Gurira) came on the scene with a chip on her shoulder and a katana to warn you of what she is capable of doing. She did things her way and didn’t care what others thought. She has always been a powerhouse in this series.

Bring these two characters together, and you’ve got a power couple for the apocalypse.

Richonne is The Walking Dead powerhouse couple

The first time Rick saw Michonne, she was outside the prison fence bleeding, covered in walker’s guts, and holding a crate of baby formula. Not exactly love at first sight. She had obtained these supplies when Merle (Michael Rooker) captured Glenn (Steven Yeun) and Maggie (Lauren Cohan).

During the episode “Clear,” Rick and Michonne bond over a brief discussion that created mutual respect that eventually grew into more. Decider reported that in 2016 creator Robert Kirkman stated that Scott Gimple had been writing toward Richonne since that episode.

Rick and Michonne also shared time after the fall of the prison. When Rick and Carl holed up in a house after the fall, Michonne tracked them and was reunited with them. They all decided to travel to Terminus together.

Many little moments might make a person suspect they would lead to becoming a couple. Remember when she brought him a razor as a gift from one of her supply runs? She was checking him out, noticing that his “face was losing a war with your scruff.” Remember when he shaved when they got to Alexandria? Michonne was all giggles and grins.

There have been many highs and lows in their relationship, but they still became a couple and raised Carl until his death and Judith together until Rick was assumed dead, Michonne was distraught at the thought of losing Rick during the bridge explosion. Next to the look on Daryl’s (Norman Reedus) face when the bridge blew up, it was Michonne’s that broke the hearts of viewers the most.

After the time jump in season 9, fans saw how much Judith (Cailey Fleming) had grown; it was exciting to learn that the Grimes legacy will also continue in little RJ (Antony Azor). The little man who would carry on the Grimes name and with parentage like his, will go far.

In season 10, Michonne learns Rick survived and set out in search of him. During The Walking Dead series finale, a coda scene featured Rick and Michonne and some of what has occurred since they were last seen on the series.

Next, Rick and Michonne will be featured in their own spinoff, Summit (working title), that will premiere in 2024.  This will be a continuation of the epic love story of these two characters.
