What happens to Judith in The Walking Dead series?
By Renee Hansen
Judith Grimes was a child born during the third season of The Walking Dead. She was the biological child of Lori Grimes (Sarah Wayne Callies) and Shane Walsh (Jon Bernthal). Her father died before her birth and her mother during. Her mother’s husband Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) had always thought of this child as his and was happy to raise her as his own. It was a job shared by many as caring for an infant in an apocalypse is no easy feat. What happened to Judith in the series?
The series character of Judith had a much better fate than her comic counterpart who didn’t make it past infancy. She survived to the final episode and many hope to see her in the Rick & Michonne (Danai Gurira) series that will reunite her parents.
Throughout the series, Judith was portrayed by many child actresses, with Cailey Fleming finishing out the series. Fleming took over the role after the six-year time jump in season 9 when it was thought Rick perished in the bridge explosion. An aged-up version of Judith appeared wearing the hat passed down to her by her brother Carl (Chandler Riggs) carrying her father’s gun and welding a miniature katana, her mother Michonne’s weapon of choice. She also had a new brother named RJ (Antony Azor), a child Rick still doesn’t know about.
During the fall of the prison in season 4, Tyreese (Chad L. Coleman) saved Judith, and there was a tearful reunion for her father and brother. They found her empty car seat splattered with blood and were sure she had died.
The Walking Dead – Judith Grimes
In the final episodes of The Walking Dead Judith was shot by Governor Milton (Laila Robins). It seemed like she wasn’t doing so well, but with quick thinking and Dr. Tomi Okumura’s (Ian Anthony Dale) knowledge, she survived. In the final scene of the series, she was seen standing with RJ telling him, “We get to start over. We’re the ones who live.” A phrase her father coined, which had significant meaning.
The Rick & Michonne spinoff will air in 2024, continuing the epic love story of the two characters and featuring their reunion. Fans hope that they will also be reunited with their two surviving children. Only time will tell if this scene will be featured in the series.
