Star Trek: Discovery actress Sonequa Martin-Green is well known for playing Sasha in The Walking Dead. Sasha was introduced in season 3 of the series and died a sacrificial death in season 7. Deadline reports that Martin-Green has been cast in a new lead role in My Dead Friend Zoe.

Directed and written by Kyle Hausmann-Stokes, who co-wrote the film with A.J. Bermudez, My Dead Friend Zoe is a dramedy based on a short, Merit x Zoe. The short was also written and directed by Hausmann-Stokes, and both are inspired by his own experiences with PTSD in the military and after.

Hausmann-Stokes served five years in the US Army as a paratrooper and convoy commander and was awarded the Bronze Star while in Iraq. He would then co-found the nonprofit Veterans in Media & Entertainment and has so far committed his career to the social and human sides of the military experience.

The story follows a female veteran who has a mysterious yet comfortable relationship with her best friend from the Army, who happens to be dead. She knows it isn’t a healthy relationship but just can’t seem to let go. When her estranged Veteran grandfather, who also happens to be her hero, has a bad fall, she heads to the family lake house to help him. It is an uphill battle, but she is determined to rekindle their special bond.

Martin-Green plays Merit, while Natalie Morales plays Zoe, the deceased best friend, and Ed Harris has been cast as her grandfather.

My Dead Friend Zoe – not your typical military movie starring Sonequa Martin-Green

The team at My Dead Friend Zoe wants viewers to know this isn’t a war film or pity part for those who experience PTSD. This is a much different story, one that is unique, authentic, and unexpected.

Hausmann-Stokes shares why this project is so special and unique. You can read more about the film and the team who created it on the MDFZ website.
