The Croat (Željko Ivanek), the villain in The Walking Dead: Dead City, is proving to be one of the worst villains in The Walking Dead’s history. The latest episode revealed more about the story of the young captive he tortured, which could mean bad news for Hershel (Logan Kim).

The fourth episode of Dead City, “Everybody Wins a Prize,” begins with a flashback to Negan’s (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) days as leader of the Saviors. Fans were overjoyed to see the return of Steven Ogg’s character Simon. This flashback offered more insight into the incident that led to The Croat being exiled from the Saviors.

In an earlier episode, Negan told the story of The Croat and why he was removed from the Saviors to Maggie (Lauren Cohan). The flashback scene gave more details to the story of The Croat’s brutal torture of a young girl.

The Walking Dead: Dead City episode 4

The scene begins with Simon telling Negan they have an issue. As the pair head to the torture room, Simon explains that The Croat disobeys direct orders, and many people believe Negan needs to reign him in.

The Croat is pleased with himself as he explains to Negan that he can break the young girl and discover she was a scout for the Kingdom led by King Ezekiel. Obviously, there is no love between Simon and The Croat, and the two argue while Negan silently looks at the young torture victim, who is now dead.

The fact that The Croat is proud of his work, even though the girl was a child, shows how far he is willing to go. With Hershel as one of his captives, this could mean bad news for Hershel and devastating news for Maggie.

Negan previously told Maggie that The Croat enjoyed torturing and toying with people for fun. When he catches up to Negan, he is like a child who wants to impress his father with the creation of the Sanctuary 2.0. Can Negan provide some leverage to rescue Hershel? Or will, as I have assumed all along, Maggie trade Negan for Hershel?

The Walking Dead: Dead City airs on AMC on Sundays at 9 p.m. ET. AMC+ subscribers can view the episode three days early. With only two episodes remaining, the storyline will advance quickly.
