The Walking Dead universe was shaken in 2018 when Andrew Lincoln appeared at San Diego Comic Con (SDCC) and announced his departure from the series. The ninth season would be the last for Rick Grimes, but he explained that this relationship with Rick was far from over.
Fans were shocked and disappointed with the news as Rick is the heart and soul of The Walking Dead. Viewers will never forget the opening scene of the series in episode one, “Days Gone Bye,” which premiered on AMC in October 2010. Rick walked towards a gas station hoping to find some fuel but instead encountered a child. He would quickly discover that the child was a walker and knew what he had to do.
It was one of the best opening scenes of the series and gave viewers insight into who this Rick Grimes character is.

In 2022 another SDCC announcement would happily surprise fans. Not only was Lincoln returning in a spinoff series, he would be joined by Danai Gurira, who would reprise her role as Michonne. This news was much-needed uplift as The Walking Dead series was scheduled to air its final episode in November 2022.
Five years after announcing his departure, AMC would reveal the title of the spinoff, The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live, with a premiere scheduled in 2024. This event also revealed the first look at the new series.
