The Walking Dead: Dead City concluded the story for season 1 on July 23, 2023. This episode will lead into season 2, which AMC announced at SDCC 2023. While many things ended well for several characters, one person was not so lucky. In this episode, The Croat  (Željko Ivanek) mentions a man named Jerome. Who is he?

This article contains spoilers for The Walking Dead: Dead City season finale, “Doma Smo.”

This episode saw Maggie (Lauren Cohan) accomplish her plan to trade Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) for her son Hershel (Logan Kim). She deceived Negan into thinking she needed his help in the rescue plan, but he was, in fact, the reason The Croat abducted Hershel. He and The Dama (Lisa Emery) formulated a plan in which Negan is the missing piece.

When Negan is first in The Croat’s custody, The Croat is very chatty, excited to be in the presence of the man he looks to as a father figure. He shares that he had looked for months on the mainland for Negan, beginning his search at the Sanctuary, which was a husk abandoned long ago,” which was a depressing sight. He would eventually learn of the men Negan murdered in New Babylon.

Who is Jerome in Dead City?

Then he mentions running into Jerome, a former Savior, who was weak and alone. Although not interested in reminiscing, after The Croat does some convincing, Jerome tells him the widow’s story. He was present during the All Out War, which pitted the Saviors against the Militia. He would be the one to tell of Glenn’s (Steven Yeun) brutal death at the hands of Negan.

This story excited him as he knew Maggie would be the one to help him get Negan. She was strong and smart, with vulnerabilities to be exploited.

This is the first mention of Jerome in any of The Walking Dead series, so he was most likely not significant to Negan, but he saw what transpired and could share this information with The Croat, who used it to his advantage.

The Walking Dead: Dead City has been renewed for season 2. This will continue the story that began in the first six episodes. Will Negan return to his former self and join The Croat and Dama? Or will he be able to escape their clutches?
