Tales of the Walking Dead premiered one year ago, is it worth watching?
By Renee Hansen
On August 14, 2022, AMC premiered the first anthology series in The Walking Dead universe. Tales of the Walking Dead is the third spinoff of the main series set in the same world but introduces new characters.
Season 1 of Tales of TWD features six stand-alone stories that can be viewed in any order. Another great thing about this series is viewers don’t have to know The Walking Dead story to appreciate these apocalyptic tales. Each story is set in the United States at different periods after the outbreak.
Some long-time fans of The Walking Dead had negative responses to this series. Still, if these stories are watched, understanding there is no connection to Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) or anyone else from the main series, save one episode; they are great extensions of TWDU. If the series didn’t have Walking Dead in the name, it would have been received much differently.
One episode does include two familiar characters, Alpha and Lydia. Samantha Morton reprised her role as Alpha when she was still known as Dee. Scarlet Blum portrays a much younger Lydia than seen in the later seasons of TWD when she was played b Cassidy McClincey. This episode is the third one, and fans who watched were shocked at the twist in Alpha’s story.
Tales of the Walking Dead episodes can be viewed with an AMC+ subscription or free with ads on Roku. Episodes can be purchased on other streaming services, including Prime Video and AppleTV.
