There have been many villains throughout the eleven seasons of The Walking Dead. Alpha was one who was a brilliant yet cold and sadistic woman who terrorized anyone who didn’t follow her ways. Samantha Morton did a fantastic job in her portrayal of Alpha, the leader of the Whisperers. In season 10, she would meet her demise.

The Whisperers are a group of survivors who wear the skin of the undead to blend in with the hordes of walkers. The group lived with an Alpha as the leader, as seen in a pack of wolves. They lived in the wild and were territorial, setting boundaries and killing anyone who crossed.

Tales of the Walking Dead featured an origin story of Alpha, then known as Dee. It was always believed that Alpha started the group. This standalone episode revealed that Dee and her daughter Lydia (Scarlett Blum) were rescued by the former leader of the Whisperers, Hera (Anne Beyer), who welcomed them into their group.

At some point, she and Lydia were either kicked out of the group or escaped. This would lead to them finding Beta (Ryan Hearst), formerly known as the musician Halfmoon. Dee would return to the Whisperer’s camp, kill Hera, and become Alpha.

This would begin her reign of terror, allowing her true nature to emerge. Alpha previously killed her father at a young age, perhaps warranted, and brutally murdered her husband in front of Lydia. Alpha had no use for weak people and would eliminate them to keep her group strong. She once killed one of the Whisperers for witnessing her own weakness as she cried about her daughter.

The Walking Dead – Alpha

Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) would be the one Carol (Melissa McBride) selected as the one to kill Alpha. She let him out of this cell in Alexandria to infiltrate the Whisperers and kill their leader.

In season 9, episode 15, “The Calm Before,” Alpha selects several survivors as pike victims in response to the group crossing the border of her land. The victims were:

  • Ozzy –  Angus Sampson
  • Alek – Jason Kirkpatrick
  • D.J. – Matt Mangum
  • Frankie -Elyse Nicole DuFour
  • Tammy – Brett Butler
  • Rodney –  Joe Ando Hirsh
  • Addy – Kelley Mack
  • Enid – Katelyn Nacon
  • Tara – Alanna Masterson
  • Henry – Matt Lintz

The death of another child was too much for Carol, and losing Henry greatly affected her, causing her to rely on Negan to kill the woman responsible.

“Walk With Us,” the 12th episode of season 10, would see Negan lure Alpha to a cabin, where she believes Lydia (Cassady McClincy) is being held. She explains to Negan that she must kill Lydia because she loves her. She opens the shed door, finding it empty turns to Negan, who promptly slashes her throat. He kisses and holds her as she dies.

Negan brings her severed, reanimated head to Carol, which is when viewers learn they were partners all along. She puts Alpha’s head on one of the pikes to warn the remaining Whisperers.

Beta would later find her head and cherish it, carrying it with him. He talks to Alpha’s head, thanks her, and tells her he understands now as he stabs the head and uses some of the flesh to add to his Whisperer mask.

Alpha was a formidable villain, and Morton did a fantastic job bringing this character to life.
