This weekend theaters will premiere the latest horror movie addition to the zombie genre to kick off the Halloween viewing season. Zombie Town is a family-friendly comedy-horror starring Dan Akroyd and Chevy Chase, the latest adaptation of an R. L. Stine book.

Zombie Town adapts the same-titled R. L. Stine book from 2012 with a screenplay written by Peter Lepeniotis, Michael Samonek, and Michael Schwartz. Directed by Peter Lepeiotis, this PG-13 rated film falls somewhere between the Goosebumps kid-friendly scares and Fear Street’s slasher horror.

Stine served as the go-to for kids in the 90s into the early 2000s, longing for not-so-scary horror. Referred to as the “Stephen King for children’s literature,” Stine penned hundreds of horror novels, including several series, Fear Street, Goosebumps, Rotten School, Mostly Ghostly, and The Nightmare Room.

The story follows Mike and his friend Amy as they watch an exclusive horror film reel that unleashes a centuries-old curse turning the residents of their town into members of the undead. They must seek out the infamous filmmaker, Len Carver (Akroyd), to survive thezombies and save the world.

Zombie Town release date

The movie Zombie Town will be released in theaters on Friday, September 1.

The official poster (below) is designed by Matthew Therrien and is reminiscent of 80s teen-centric adventure films.

Zombie Town cast

Legendary comedians Dan Akroyd and Chevy Chase star in what is touted as a “mystery teen romancer.” They are joined by Henry Czerny (Scream VI) and co-teen leads Marlon Kazadi as Mike, and Madi Monroe as Amy, with Scott Thompson and Bruce McCulloch.

The trailer reveals the tone of the movie, which appears to be a great meld of the undead and spooky without being too scary or gory for younger viewers.
