Directed by BAFTA award-winner Richard Laxton, known for Effie Grey (2014), a film written by Emma Thompson starring Dakota Fanning. Joan tells of the real character of Joan Hannington, a “Godmother” in the criminal underworld in Britain. The series is written by Anna Symon and is based on Hannington’s memoir, I Am What I Am: The True Story of Britain’s Most Notorious Jewel Thief. The story tells of her transformation from a housewife and mother to a petty offender, a diamond thief, and eventually criminal mastermind in London in the 1980s.
The six-part series is set in the ’80s and sees Joan stuck in a horrible marriage. When her husband goes on the run, she and her six-year-old daughter Kelly adopt new identities. They start a new life, which leads to Joan becoming a master jewel thief.
