2. Jesus (Tom Payne)

Paul Rovia, better known as Jesus, was one character who should have made it to the end. He was brave, resourceful, charming, and a fighter. During the midseason finale of season 9, “Evolution,” Jesus would meet his untimely death in a scene that was quite shocking.

Eugene was found hiding in a barn by Daryl and Jesus. He tells them of an irregular horde of walkers that “were whispering to each other.” They think he is even crazier when he tells them he believes the walkers are evolving.

Daryl shoots a firework to distract the herd, but they keep coming towards them. The night is foggy, making it difficult to see what is happening. They enter a cemetery where Aaron, Jesus, and Eugene fight off the walkers as they hear whispers around them. Michonne, Magna, and Yumiko arrive to unlock the gate while Jesus says he will fight off the walkers to allow them to escape. When he moves to kill the final one, it dodges his sword and stabs him in the back, whispering, “You are where you do not belong,” to the shock of everyone. The whisperers have arrived.

It was a fantastic scene, and if you are going to be killed off the series, this was the way to do it.
