3. Lori (Sarah Wayne Callies)

Lori was a character who just liked to cause trouble between Rick and Shane. She was quite annoying, constantly pitting the former best friends against one another.

During the fourth episode of season 3, “Killer Within,” one life would end while another began. After walkers overrun the courtyard of the prison, Carl, Lori, and Maggie make their way to safety inside the prison. Lori suddenly goes into labor, and Maggie is prepared to deliver. When complications arise, Maggie realizes she must perform a c-section; either Lori dies, or the baby does.

She decides to allow her child to live, says her tearful goodbyes to her son, and prepares for what’s to come. Maggie begins the c-section, Lori passes out due to the pain, the baby is born, and Lori bleeds out. While all of that was quite emotional, next, Carl has to do the unthinkable: shoot his mother in the head so she doesn’t reanimate.

Love Lori or not, this was one of the series’ most heartbreaking and gory deaths.
