The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon sets up Carol’s story for season 2
By Renee Hansen
The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon has completed its first season, and this series was an excellent addition to The Walking Dead universe. The continuation of Daryl’s (Norman Reedus) story in France has greatly expanded the universe. The final scene of the finale featured fan-favorite character Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride), who will join the series in season 2.
Rumors had circulated that Carol would join the series when McBride was seen on set in France. AMC officially announced McBride’s inclusion in the second season at New York Comic Con (NYCC) 2023.
This article contains spoilers for The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon season 1, episode 6, “Coming Home.”
In a flashback in the fifth episode of the Daryl Dixon series, Carol and Daryl made radio contact while he was still in the United States. Her voice sounded strained and distressed when she tried to tell him of something or someone who had returned to the Commonwealth, but the connection was lost, so he never found out what she was trying to say. Soon after, Daryl would be thrown on the ship to France.
The final scene of the season transports viewers back to Freeport, Maine, where a man is riding Daryl’s motorcycle and is pursued by Carol in a Mustang. She bashes him with a wrench in an attempt to find out where he got the bike as she is searching for Daryl. In the earlier radio call, Daryl told her he would return in a week, but when this didn’t happen, it is no surprise that Carol went in searching for him.
The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon – The Book of Carol
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, showrunner David Zabel states that in the second season, Carol has a very active story, including an important internal one. Her story spans the episodes of the upcoming season.
"“…so she has a great dual track that we’re setting her off on, and we’ve shot some of that already, and it’s going to be fantastic when it’s all together.”"
He goes on to say that the second season will focus on bringing Daryl and Carol back together. This will be a story about people saving one another.
"“The larger version of that was that there’s this sense of looking for things to save you, which is very much played out in season 1. Does religion save you? Does science save you? Science being this misguided science that we see with the walkers in season 1. And the idea — which is a very simple idea, but the writers and I were always thinking about was, science can’t save us. Religion can’t save us. The only thing that can save us is ourselves, is each other.”"
