Walking Dead actor C. Thomas Howell’s music career and more
By Renee Hansen
In 2022, actor C. Thomas Howell, best known for his role in Francis Ford Coppola’s 1983 film The Outsiders as Ponyboy Curtis, switched gears and launched his music career. He has played numerous roles throughout his acting career, with more to come, and released his first album in 2023.
Howell’s long-running acting career began when he was very young, and in 2022, he would expand his resume with his first song, “Rose Hill.” The song was inspired while he walked in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Macon, Georgia. This is the location where members of the Allman Brothers Band are buried. Howell explained to People that he couldn’t help but think of laying down and jamming with the Allam Brothers.
In 2023, Howell’s first full-length album, American Storyteller, was released. The album contains 11 tracks, including “Rose Hill” and “Ponygirl,” inspired by the poem “My Pony Boy” by Bobby Heath and Charley O’Donnell. “The song is a lullaby ballad about a cowboy searching for the love of his life.”

The coming-of-age story is told through Ponyboy’s eyes, and Howell won a Young Artist Award for his performance.
He would reunite with his Outsiders co-star Patrick Swayze for Grandview, U.S.A., and Red Dawn. He has also starred in Soul Man, The Hitcher, Secret Admirer, Gettysburg, and God’s and Generals. Throughout his career, Howell has amassed over 224 acting roles.
