July 2026 was a huge month for news about The Walking Dead. Every year, we always get some big updates about The Walking Dead from San Diego Comic-Con. This year, that was a little bit disappointing, with The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon sitting out SCC and only The Walking Dead: Deady City having a presence at the convention.
Even with the lack of that big Walking Dead presence that we're used to, we learned some really important information about the main series and its spinoffs.
Honestly, that's the most surprising thing. We've seen updates about AMC, The Walking Dead, The Walking Dead: Dead City, and, of course, The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon in the last month. So, to make sure all fans of The Walking Dead are up to speed on the latest, I put together a list of the three biggest Walking Dead updates you need to know from July 2026.
The Walking Dead: Dead City has not been renewed for season 4 yet
This feels like the smallest update of the bunch, but that's not actually true for a few reasons. Everyone was expecting Dead City would be renewed for season 4 during the panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday, July 24, but that didn't happen.
Now, on the surface, I don't think it's the worst thing that the series didn't get renewed, but it's definitely a little bit concerning. If The Walking Dead and AMC were ready to go all-in on this show, it would have made sense to kick off season 3 with the news that this isn't the end of the series.
Again, not the worst thing in the world, but it's definitely a little problematic when you realize that beyond Daryl Dixon season 4, there are no confirmed plans for any of The Walking Dead shows. It would have been great for AMC to quell the fear that Dead City could end after season 3.
AMC could be setting up a big cliffhanger with the season 3 finale that they don't want to ruin yet. They could also be waiting for a chance to make a splash later this year with the season 4 renewal news.
The network might also be waiting to see how Dead City season 3 performs before making a call on season 4. Famously, the show hasn't always been a ratings darling, but I don't think it's quite on he chopping block.
Only time will tell, apparently.
The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon season 4 is coming in 2027
The most surprising news to come out of SDCC was revealed ealier on Friday, July 24, by Norman Reedus. The star of Daryl Dixon revealed that season 4 is not coming in September or October 2026 as we all had been hoping. Instead, Daryl Dixon season 4 will premiere sometime in 2027.
Scott M. Gimple, the CCO and producer of The Walking Dead, backed up Reedus' claim during the Dead City season 3 panel at SDCC. There's no way that we'll see Daryl Dixon season 4 this year.
It also sounds like we might be waiting until next summer to see Daryl Dixon season 4. Reedus claimed that the show would be back at SDCC in 2027. If they time the fourth and final season to be released around SDCC 2027, we're all in for quite the wait for Daryl Dixon season 4.

Thank you to every single one of you who joined us on this journey – through the good, the brutal and everything in between. We’ve gotten a lot of bruises, scars and concussions along the way. A lot of hard work went into this series, especially the crews. This last chapter is gonna hit different and hit hard. I can’t wait for you all to see them. See you in 2027. Missing u all at Comicon"
The Walking Dead will remain on Netflix
Earlier this year, it was revealed that The Walking Dead could potentially leave Netflix for the first time since 2011. The licensing rights were up, and AMC was interested in potentially licensing the show to other streamers.
Well, that didn't happen! The Walking Dead will remain on Netflix for at least five more years in the United States. The full series will be available to stream on Netflix US and other locations, too, including the UK, Italy, Australia, and New Zealand, according to the press release.
On top of that, all of The Walking Dead shows will be available to stream on Netflix. Currently, you can watch The Walking Dead, Fear the Walking Dead, Dead City, and Daryl Dixon on Netflix, but next year, you will be able to watch The Ones Who Live, Tales of The Walking Dead, and World Beyond on Netflix, too.
With the deal for The Walking Dead to remain on Netflix, AMC+ will also add The Walking Dead at some point in the future.
This is the best-case scenario for Netflix, AMC, and The Walking Dead, to me. I'll share more thoughts later, but really, it's just a win for all the parties, especially fans who get more convenient ways to watch The Walking Dead.
