Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey is finally here. As one of the most highly anticipated movies of the year, it's easy to see why viewers around the world are heading to theaters to see this epic adventure with a star-studded cast.
If you needed a little more push to go see the movie and you're a fan of The Walking Dead, well, I have some good news for you. There are four big stars of The Walking Dead who have big roles in The Odyssey, which was just released in theaters on Thursday, July 16.
Although we see so many stars of The Walking Dead in big movies and shows, we haven't seen this many Walking Dead stars in one movie or show in a long time. That makes The Odyssey quite notable. Some of The Walking Dead spinoffs haven't had this many stars from the original series.
We shared the list of Walking Dead stars to watch for when you check out The Odyssey, starting with the man, the myth, the legend, Jon Bernthal.
Jon Bernthal (Shane Walsh)
Who they play in The Odyssey: Menelaus
Jon Bernthal is first on the list, and that's because he plays the biggest role in The Odyssey. Bernthal stars in the film as Menelaus, the King of Sparta. He meets Telemachus, played by Tom Holland, who is Odysseus' son, while he's looking for his father. Menelaus plays the role of a mentor of sorts to Telemachus, and he helps guide him in his journey.
For those who don't know the story of Homer's The Odyssey, Odysseus, who will be played in the film by Matt Damon, gets lost on his way home from the Trojan War. A Odysseus leads his men home, his son also goes on a journey of his own to find his father. That's when Menelaus comes into the story.
Bernthal, who starred for two seasons as Shane Walsh, one of the most polarizing characters in the series, is the perfect pick to play Menelaus. I can't wait to see him in this role. Thankfully, that wait is over. One of Bernthal's iconic lines made it into The Odyssey, too!
Samantha Morton (Alpha)
Who they play in The Odyssey: Circe
Samantha Morton, who starred as Alpha in the ninth and tenth seasons of The Walking Dead, has a pretty integral role in The Odyssey. I don't think we'll be seeing Morton on screen as much as Bernthal, but she should be a big part of Odysseus' story.
Morton stars as Circe, a goddess who is the daughter of Helios and Perse. She comes across Odysseus on the island of Aeaea. Circe is one of many who traps Odysseus and his men. Without going into too many spoilers, eventually, Odysseus gains the upper hand and continues on back toward Ithaca.
Ryan Hurst (Beta)
Who they play in The Odyssey: Mentor
Ryan Hurst is one of The Walking Dead fan favorites from The Walking Dead season 9 and season 10, just like Morton, who played Alpha. Hurst has an incredible role in The Odyssey as Mentor.
Again, without getting too deep in the weeds, Mentor is a key part of Odyseuss' life, and he asks him to basically be a friend, ally, and—you guessed it—mentor to Telemachus, his son, when he goes to war. Mention, though, isn't just a friend. Athena, the goddess of wisdom, among other things, actually communicates with Telemachus through Mentor and attempts to guide the young man in his own journey. Guess who plays Athena in the movie? None other than Zendaya.
It's going to be so fun to watch Hurst in a role like this. It's not going to be huge, but it is crucial.
Corey Hawkins (Heath)
Who they play in The Odyssey: Polybus
Last but not least, Corey Hawkins also has a role to play in The Odyssey. The Walking Dead fans will remember Hawkins as Heath from season 6 and season 7. He didn't have a massive role in The Walking Dead, but it was quite impactful during a very pivotal time in the show with Alexandria and the arrival of Negan.
In The Odyssey, Hawkins, who is best known for starring as Dr. Dre in Straight Outta Compton, plays Polybus, who is one of the men who travel to Ithaca in Odyseuss' absence to try to marry his wife, Penelope, played by Anne Hathaway.
So, those are the four stars of The Walking Dead who are playing big roles in Nolan's The Odyssey, which just opened in theaters around the world.
