The Walking Dead is a franchise that keeps on giving, and fans dread the day they'll have to finally bid the zombie series farewell for good. Starting with the original show in 2010, this franchise has blossomed into a massive, ever-expanding universe that has thrilled, shocked, and hooked viewers for over a decade.

What began as a simple story of staying alive amidst zombies quickly turned into a full-blown cultural sensation, spawning six spinoff series that spun off into their own thrilling stories taking place in the same world. Currently, there are only two ongoing spinoffs. They are The Walking Dead: Dead City and The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon. A seventh spinoff is also in the works, titled More Tales from the Walking Dead Universe.

But while the spinoffs are great and all, what fans really want is a return to the original series. They want to see all of their favorite surviving OG characters reunite for one last time before the franchise wraps up. Unfortunately, there hasn't been an official announcement from AMC or franchise creator Frank Darabont. However, there's hope that this might happen one day. In the meantime, beloved Walking Dead star Andrew Lincoln has just teased something big, sending fans into a frenzy.

Andrew Lincoln teases potential Walking Dead return

On Sunday, Sept. 21, 2025, Lincoln appeared on BBC One's Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, where he talked about his new play, The Lady from the Sea. Of course, he couldn't escape being asked about The Walking Dead and the possibility of his character, Rick Grimes, ever returning.

When asked directly if he’d go back to the show, Lincoln said, “Yeah, well, there’s a conversation happening right now." In other words, there are ongoing talks or possibilities about him returning to the Walking Dead universe. Lincoln didn't go into further detail and instead shifted the conversation back to his current projects, but that brief comment was enough to set Walking Dead fans buzzing with excitement.

What exactly could Lincoln have meant by this? Obviously, he's stating that there are current talks about him possibly reprising his Rick role. But in what? Could we finally be getting our Walking Dead revival to reunite Rick, Michonne, Daryl, Carol, Negan, Maggie, and Morgan? Nobody knows that Rick is alive besides Michonne after they reunited in The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live. He was believed to be dead after the bridge explosion in the original series. So, a reunion is definitely needed with all of them.

Daryl and Carol are currently in Spain, trying to make their way back to America in Daryl Dixon season 3. Meanwhile, Negan and Maggie are still stuck in New York in Dead City. The last time we saw Morgan was in the Fear the Walking Dead season 8 episode 6, when he made the decision to journey back to Alexandria with his daughter. Honestly, a Walking Dead revival in series or movie form could work. We just want to see all these characters back together again. They've each experienced many things while apart, so they would have much to discuss when reunited.

Who knows? Perhaps there are ongoing conversations about another spinoff or the continuation of The Ones Who Live that Lincoln could be hinting at. Although The Ones Who Live was billed as a limited series, it's one of The Walking Dead's most popular spinoffs. That said, it wouldn't be surprising if AMC decided to expand the story further with a second season. But we'd bet on another spinoff or a Walking Dead revival over a return to The Ones Who Live. That show just seems like it works best as a standalone story.

There's also the possibility that we could see Lincoln return as Rick in one of the spinoffs that are currently airing. Who wouldn't want to see Rick in Spain in Daryl Dixon or in New York in Dead City? That would definitely be a change of scenery for him.

Now that Lincoln has dropped this big tease, we're hoping that more details will follow soon. Of course, you can count on us at Undead Walking to keep you updated with every development, rumor, and official announcement about Lincoln's potential return to The Walking Dead universe.
