When you think of post-apocalyptic television, your mind probably jumps straight to zombies, decaying cities, and survivors fighting for every scrap of food and safety. But the world after the apocalypse is vast, and danger doesn’t always wear the face of the undead. There are stories of humanity pushed to the brink by environmental collapse, political upheaval, and the collapse of society itself.
For Walking Dead fans who’ve spent years watching friends turn on each other, alliances crumble, and the living prove as terrifying as the dead, there’s a whole other side of the genre waiting to be discovered. In this article, we've put together a list of three must-watch post-apocalyptic series that prove the end of the world doesn’t need zombies to be thrilling, heart-wrenching, and completely addictive!
Paradise
- Cast: Sterling K. Brown, James Marsden, Julianne Nicholson, Sarah Shahi, Nicole Brydon Bloom, Krys Marshall, Enuka Okuma
- Where to watch: Hulu
Hulu’s Paradise has quickly established itself as one of the most ambitious and compelling series on the streaming platform. Created by Dan Fogelman, the mastermind behind This Is Us, the show mixes post-apocalyptic political intrigue, intense character drama, and mind-bending science fiction elements to create a layered and suspenseful narrative that keeps viewers invested. There are two seasons so far, with a third installment already confirmed.
The series begins in a seemingly perfect, tightly controlled community, where the wealthy and influential live under the guise of order and civility. This facade is shattered when President Cal Bradford is found murdered, which sends shockwaves through the community and sets the stage for the central mystery.
Secret Service agent Xavier Collins quickly emerges as the focal point. Smart, principled, and relentless, Xavier is determined to uncover the truth. But in Paradise, nothing is straightforward, and every character seems to carry secrets that could change everything.
Based on this plot, you're probably wondering what about Paradise is post-apocalyptic. Well, it eventually becomes clear that the community is actually an underground bunker. It was designed to protect a select group of survivors after a global catastrophe devastated the surface world.
Falling Skies
- Cast: Noah Wyle, Moon Bloodgood, Drew Roy, Jessy Schram, Maxim Knight, Seychelle Gabriel, Peter Shinkoda
- Where to watch: Netflix
Imagine waking up to find the world you know completely destroyed. Cities are leveled, governments have fallen, and nearly all of humanity has been wiped out. This is the grim reality of Falling Skies, the TNT sci-fi drama created by Robert Rodat and executive produced by Steven Spielberg. Spanning five seasons from 2011 to 2015, the series takes viewers on a harrowing journey of survival, resistance, and hope in a post-apocalyptic Earth.
The story begins six months after a devastating extraterrestrial attack has ravaged the planet. The invaders, later revealed as the Espheni, have destroyed global military defenses, disabled technology, and killed millions. Humanity is scattered and in hiding, struggling to survive in a world where every day is a fight for food, shelter, and safety. The remnants of civilization have no central leadership, and trust is a rare commodity.
At the center of it all is the 2nd Massachusetts Militia Regiment, known as the 2nd Mass. This group of soldiers, civilians, and families represents humanity’s last organized resistance. Their mission is clear. That's to survive, protect what remains of human life, and fight back against the alien oppressors who now rule the planet.
Fallout
- Cast: Ella Purnell, Aaron Moten, Kyle MacLachlan, Moisés Arias, Xelia Mendes-Jones, Walton Goggins, Frances Turner
- Where to watch: Prime Video
Video game adaptations have always been a tricky business. Some have bombed spectacularly, leaving fans frustrated and critics unimpressed. Others try to capture the magic of the source material but fall flat, either because they're too faithful or too far removed from what made the games beloved. But with Prime Video’s Fallout, however, it feels like the gamble has finally paid off.
Created by Graham Wagner and Geneva Robertson-Dworet, the series brings the post-apocalyptic world of the iconic Fallout video games to life with a careful balance of faithfulness and original storytelling. Set roughly 200 years after the nuclear Great War of 2077, the show explores a world where humanity has survived in underground Vaults. Meanwhile, the surface is a hazardous wasteland filled with mutants, scavenger factions, and remnants of pre-war civilization.
We follow Lucy MacLean, a young Vault dweller whose sheltered life is turned upside down when she must explore the dangerous surface. Along the way, she meets Cooper Howard/The Ghoul, a mutant survivor with his own secrets, and Maximus from the Brotherhood of Steel, a faction obsessed with old-world technology. Her father, Hank MacLean, also plays a big role. He gives Lucy a personal motivation on her journey. There are two seasons of Fallout out so far, with a third season already renewed.
