The BETNetworks and Hartbeat original series Lil Kev premiered exclusively on BET+ on March 6. The series features an all-star cast, including Kevin Hart, Wanda Sykes, and Deon Cole. Mo Collins, who is well known for her role as Sarah in AMC's Walking Dead spinoff Fear the Walking Dead, also makes a guest appearance.
Lil Kev is an adult animated series set in 1993 Philadelphia that follows 12-year-old Kevin Hart whose limitless imagination and positive attitude clash with the harsh realities experienced by his neighbors. Sykes portrays Nancy, Kevin's mom, a hard working ER nurse juggling her night shift job and parenting rascally Kevin. This proves difficult with only his mischievous older brother Robert (Jamar Neighbors), his trainwreck of a father Henry (Gerald "Slink" Johnson), and ex-con uncle Richard Jr. (Cole) to look up to. Through it all, Lil Kev handles everything that comes his way with humor, hustle, and heart, propelling him into comedic superstardom.
Collins guest stars as Mrs. O'Lady, a 90-something senior who fondly wishes for the bygone days of the neighborhood before her family abandoned her. She is the only white resident in the neighborhood who is prone to saying outrageous things.
Lil Kev is the first adult animated series from BET+ that gives an authentic look to Hart's upbringing and childhood experiences in 1990s Philly. The show takes a satirical and sometimes politically subversive approach to real-life issues in the Black community, with no subject off-limits, ensuring a thought-provoking viewing experience.
Matthew Claybrooks and Michael Price serve as showrunners who executive produce with Hart, Bryan Smiley, Jeff Clanagan, Mike Stein, and Candice Wilson Cherry. Hartbeat’s Tiffany Brown acts as co-executive producer. Alex Bulkley and Corey Campodonico will also executive produce for ShadowMachine, who provided the animations for the series. Musa Brooker acts as supervising director, and Jason Harvey and Rose Catherine Pinkney will executive produce for BET+.
The cast of Lil Kev includes Kevin Hart, Wanda Sykes, Deon Cole, Gerald “Slink” Johnson, Jamar Neighbors, Cree Summer, Anjelah Johnson-Reyes, and Patricia “Ms. Pat” Williams. Several guest stars will appear, including Wé Ani, Mo Collins, Affion Crockett, Tyree Elaine, Justin Hires, Rick Ingraham, Jayden Libran, Freddy Lockhart, and Aiko Tanaka.
