An animated version of The Walking Dead could be a great idea for the fandom

Fans of the long-running Walking Dead series and comic story are faithful to the fandom, and an animated version could prove to be a positive addition.

Reports have circulated that Robert Kirkman, creator of The Walking Dead comic, has voiced a positive response to the idea of an animated Walking Dead adaptation of the comic story. Comicbook.com reports that in The Walking Dead Deluxe #79, Kirkman responded to a fan letter regarding an animated series.

Kirkman stated, "I think it would be a lot of fun to do a faithful animated adaptation, but I don't know AMC's appetite for such things." Perhaps AMC might be interested not but the fans certainly would. Especially fans of the comic who would love to see a story that follows the comic.

The comic and series stories differ greatly, with some charaters taking storylines of others and several new, non-comic, characters are introduced. This has always been a sore spot with faithful comic readers as they were eager to see things progress according to the source material.

Kirkman has had great success with this animated adpataion of Invincible, another of his comic stories. The series airs on Amazon Prime Video and it recently released the first half of the second season. Invincible stars Walking Dead and Beef actor Steven Yeun as the titular character, also known as Mark Grayson. He is the son of the most powerful superhero on the planet, Omniman (J.K. Simmons). The first season follows Mark as he turns 17 and begins discovering his superpowers.

While this is a very interesting concept, another element that would add more interest is if the series actors voiced the characters. This might be difficult as many of these actors lead very busy lives with new projects and Walking Dead spinoffs. It is difficult to say whether or not this idea will ever lead anywhere.

Kirkman's Invincible is currently keeping him very busy and he hasn't written an episode of The Walking Dead series since season 5 and has been unable to write anything for the spinoffs. He stated he is happy with the way the series ended, praising showrunner Angela Kang and added that he always enjoyed the parts of the series that follow the comic closely.
