By Renee Hansen
Actor Zach McGowan is well known for his roles in Shameless and The 100. He also portrayed a Savior named Justin in season 9 of The Walking Dead. Another great series McGowan is known for is the action-adventure series Black Sails, which originally aired on Starz. Walking Dead composer Bear McCreary is responsible for the Black Sails score, giving even more reason to check it out.
Created by Jonathan E. Steinberg, co-creator of Jericho, and Robert Levine, Black Sails premiered for free on YouTube on January 18, 2014, with its cable debut a week later. Steinberg, with Michael Bay, Brad Fuller, and Andrew Form, serve as executive producers, and Levine, Michael Angeli, and Doris Egan are co-executive producers.
The series is set in the early 18th century, approximately two decades ahead of events in Robert Louis Stevenson's 1883 novel Treasure Island. This was during the Golden Age of Piracy and the series features pirates coming against the British government's attempts to stop them from obtaining the treasures they seek.
McGowan stars as a pirate, Charles Vane, with Tom Hopper as William "Billy Bones" Manderly and Toby Stephens as Captain Flint; the two later are fictional characters from Treasure Island. Other real pirates fictionalized in the series include Anne Bonny, Benjamin Hornigold, Jack Rackham, Charles Vane, Ned Low, Israel Hands, and Blackbeard.
Other cast members who star in the series are Hannah New
