The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon will premiere its second season on AMC and AMC+ on September 29. The upcoming season is subtitled The Book of Carol, as this character, portrayed by Melissa McBride, returns to TWDU after her final appearance in the main series' final episode. McBride, Norman Reedus, Louis Puech Scigliuzzi, showrunner David Zabel, and Greg Nicotero talked about the series at the 2024 San Diego Comic-Con.

Daryl Dixon is the fifth spinoff and second direct spinoff of The Walking Dead series that premiered in 2010. The main series aired for eleven seasons and has spawned a slew of outstanding spinoffs set in the same world. The Daryl Dixon series premiered in 2023 and will debut its second this fall. Word had spread that the series was renewed for a third season, a fact that was confirmed at SDCC.

During the Variety Studio session (below), the cast and crew were on hand to discuss the series and its upcoming third season. One interesting change is that the series will move to Spain in its third season. When asked why the change, Reedus commented, sangria. Showrunner Zabel agreed that sangria and great food persuaded them, but the main reason for this change is to accommodate Daryl (Reedus) and Carol's story as they make their journey home.

Walking Dead director, executive producer, and SFX guru Greg Nicotero added that one reason they moved production to Europe was to place the familiar characters in a new setting. Zabel then stated that this is what sets this series apart from the other Walking Dead series.

According to Variety, the series will be filmed and set in Spain, with production taking place in Madrid. The story will be told in various locations, including Galicia, Aragon, Catalonia, and Valencia regions.

Season 3 synopsis: Carol and Daryl will continue their journey towards home and the ones they love. As they struggle to find their way back, the path takes them farther astray, leading them through distant lands with ever-changing and unfamiliar conditions as they witness the various effects of the Walker apocalypse.

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon - season 2 - The Book of Carol

Of the three direct spinoffs, Dead City, The Ones Who Live, and Daryl Dixon, the latter is quite unique, being set in France. This significantly expanded the universe and allowed viewers to get a glimpse of how other countries fared since the outbreak. Coupled with a new French cast and crew, it has given the Daryl Dixon series a new perspective on an apocalyptic world. Reedus has many times stated that filming is much different with the French crew. He feels in Georiga, things often run like a machine, but in France, the crew will step back, and just when Reedus thinks they will begin filming again, they want to know more about what drives the characters in the segment they are filming. This has given the series a much different look and feel than anything in TWDU.

Reedus believes in this series and has made an extremely bold statement regarding the season 2 finale of Daryl Dixon:

"I think the finale of season 2 is the best one hour of Walking Dead anything ever. And I’ve been here since day 3, so for real, it’s my favorite one hour of Walking Dead anything."
