Georgia Beach named one of the best in 2024 is a filming location for The Walking Dead
By Renee Hansen
The Walking Dead has filming sites strewn about the state of Georgia. Walking Dead fans often travel to the state to visit the sites where the series was filmed. In 2024, TripAdvisor added Georgia's Driftwood Beach (No. 15) to its list of the Best Beaches in the US. The thumbnail image alone showcases why this beach was chosen. This site has been used to film some great scenes from TWD series.
Beginning in season 7 of The Walking Dead, a new community, Oceanside, was introduced. This community was made of women and children, as all of the male residents over the age of 10 were killed by Negan's (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) Saviors in a raid led by Simon (Steven Ogg).
Despite the horrific fate of Oceanside, the filming location was on picturesque Jekyll Island, specifically at Driftwood Beach. This location was used in seasons 7 and 10 for scenes filmed at Oceanside.
TWD Locations is a website that catalogs all of the filming sites, and the page on Jekyll Island gives more details about what scenes and episodes were filmed there. You can also plan out a self-guided tour using the maps provided on the site.
The first time Jekyll Island is featured is in season 7, episode 6, "Swear," when Tara (Alanna Masterson) washes ashore at Oceanside. Next, it would be featured in season 7, episode 6, "Something They Need," where the barnacle walkers showed up along the beach.
In season 10, episode 1, "Lines We Cross," the beach would aga]ain be featured during the training sessions as well as when Carol (Melissa McBride) arrives at Oceanside by boat. In season 10, episode 12, "What We Become," Virgil (Kevin Carroll) is seen watching Michonne (Danai Gurria) leave as she begins her search for Rick (Andrew Lincoln).
The island has been home to many other productions, including Glory (1989), The Legend of Bagger Vance (2000), and The Tomorrow War (2021).
If you get a chance you have to visit Jekyll Island as it truly is one of the best beaches in the United States.
