Walking Dead actor Tom Payne reminisces about moving to America
By Renee Hansen
British actor Tom Payne has had some fantastic roles during his career, starring alongside some big names, including Dustin Hoffman, Nick Nolte, Frances McDormand, and Amy Adams. He was cast in The Walking Dead during the sixth season, portraying Paul Rovia, better known as Jesus. This character was featured in the comic story the series is based on, and Payne did an outstanding job of breathing life into Jesus for the screen, looking as if he walked off the comic page. Recently, Payne shared a post on social media regarding the anniversary of his move to America.
The photo caption reveals that 13 years ago, Payne decided to move to the States. He was cast in a pilot for HBO titled Luck, which is set in the horse racing world, and Payne portrayed a jockey named Leon Micheaux. The series was created by David Milch (Deadwood), with the pilot episode directed by Michael Mann (Miami Vice) and aired for one season. The series also stars Hoffman, Nolte, and fellow Walking Dead alum Ritchie Coster (Pope in season 11 of TWD). The series is currently available to stream on Max.
Payne, his wife Jennifer Åkerman, and their son recently attended a horse race at Santa Anita Park, located in Arcadia, California, where Luck was filmed, where he states it "Was really wonderful to show my wife and son the genesis of my American life."
What else does Tom Payne star in?
Payne would begin his career in the BBC series Waterloo Road in 2007. He then filmed Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day and Skins, a British teen comedy.
He was then cast in the title role in The Physician, an adventure drama based on the same-titled book by Noah Gordon. The movie tells of a surgeon's apprentice who disguises himself as a Jew to study at a school that doesn't admit Christians in 11th-century Persia. The film also stars Stellan Skarsgård and Ben Kingsley.
After leaving The Walking Dead, Payne was cast as Malcolm Bright in the Prodigal Son series. Bright, a former FBI profiler who works for the New York Police Department, is the son of the serial killer known as "The Surgeon." He is forced to confront his father, with whom he previously cut all ties when a copycat killer emerges. The series aired for two seasons on Fox and is currently streaming on Max.
Next, Payne will star in the Blumhouse horror, Imaginary which premieres in theaters on March 8, 2024. He will also star in Kevin Costner's Civil War film, Horizon: An American Saga. The film will be released in two parts on June 28 and August 16, 2024.
