Actress Lynn Collins is well known for her roles in John Carter, The Number 23, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, The Walking Dead, and more. In August, Collins took to social media to explain her extended absence.

Collins spent the majority of July in Cedars Sinai Hospital as she was diagnosed with sepsis, a full-body strep infection (the flesh-eating variety), pneumonia, and anemia. This is a diagnosis that, more often than not, ends in death. Collins and her crack team of doctors fought diligently for her life and won.

Sepsis is referred to as "blood poisoning" and often leads to death after your body responds so violently to an infection that it damages and possibly destroys vital organs. In the US, the disease kills 350,000 adults each year. September is Sepsis Awareness Month, and you can learn more about the disease and perhaps donate at Sepsis.org.

Collins shared that fear blinded her during her ordeal, of which she saw no positive outcome. But something switched inside her, and she began to express her gratitude aloud. Alone in her hospital room, scared for her life, and through her tears, she began recalling all the people she had to be thankful for. After exhausting herself, she fell asleep.

When she awoke, her heart rate, which had been extremely elevated, decreased. Within 12 hours, her body responded quickly to the antibiotics, and her lungs were drained and cleared quickly. The doctors then believed she would survive.
